Welcome to Feedback, in which we take a closer look at some of the more notable new releases. For this installment, contributing writer bareklik takes a look at Sasu Ripatti’s latest LP as Uusitalo.
UUSITALO: Karhunainen
Huume
Sasu Ripatti’s Uusitalo project is a reflection of his personal history. As he said in a recent Resident Advisor interview, Uusitalo is “…something like my Finnish project where I keep things a little bit like Finland.” This project’s song and album titles come from his family’s strong literary and intellectual background. Sonically, it would seem that Ripatti expresses this personal quality by combining elements of his Luomo and Vladislav Delay projects but decidedly forgoes qualities of the other two projects which may seem epic, romantic, or grandiose.
Karhunainen, the third Uusitalo full-length, is not a stylistic evolution so much as a practiced expression and study of that style. As such, the album is often cerebral, leaving the dance floor entirely. Some patience is required, especially on tedious, anti-climactic tracks like “Sikojen Juhla (Feast of Pigs)” and “Nälkälaulu (Hunger Song)”. That said, the remaining eight tracks could fit nicely into nearly any ‘get-down-n-bump-it’ DJ mix.
You’ll hear traces of each of Ripatti’s guises on Karhunainen’s ten tracks: Luomo’s pattern of long progressions between varying warm, dub-inflected house grooves; Vladislav Delay’s attention to detail and penchant for narrative exploration; Ripatti’s general habit of developing dense, echoing reservoirs of tiny sounds in the background of complex poly-rhythms and valleys of bass and harmonics.
Yet he also seems to aggregate outside inspirations from a host of muses. Tracks like ‘Karhunainen (Bear Woman)’ and ‘Himo Perkele (Lust Perkele)’ call to mind producers like Thomas Brinkmann, Antonelli Electr, Wolfgang Voigt, Jorg Burger, Swayzak while “Konevitsa (Machine Cane)” is reminiscent of Pole’s classic numbers trilogy. Some of the rhythms here even sound like an attempt to resurrect the aborted Kompakt-style schaffel house – a la the Schaffelfieber compilations and early Speicher releases (although, in the hands of Ripatti, this style’s foot-dragging rhythm is far more impressive).
Karhunainen manages to touch on all these influences while still remaining uniquely Uusitalo. It is a logical progression from the last release, “Tulenkantaja”, in terms of carrying that same sound of crisp, quick drums, bass, and synths through closely edited tracks.
Despite a few obvious weaknesses, Uusitalo’s Karhunainen stands as one of Sasu Ripatti’s best and most personal efforts.

MELCHIOR PRODUCTIONS: No Disco Future
Perlon
Breaking from the brainier approach of the Ark and Dandy Jack full-lengths that preceeded it, Thomas Melchior’s new album on Perlon (the follow-up to his 2004 LP on Playhouse) is a perfect model for how to bring together minimal techno and house. Melchior champions restrained minimalism run through with a vibrant bounce and tastefully applied vocals. On No Disco Future, he coaxes playful patterns from his instruments, enticing you with booming bass and a masterful rhythmic shuffle. Track titles like “Prepare for Love” and “Where’s the Happiness” are accurate representations of the feelings these tracks evoke. Easily among Perlon’s most accessible achievements, this is shaping up to be our album of the year.
BENNO BLOME: From Antenna to Antenna 1
Sender
Sender boss Benno Blome celebrates his label’s extensive catalog of surging minimal techno with this mixed retrospective that draws more heavily from recent releases. Featured artists inclue Misc., Baby Ford, Error Error, Frank Martiniq, Franklin de Costa, Andre Crom and more.

Simple
The first disc of this two disc collection features an unmixed disc of Will Saul’s productions and remixes of and by Saul from artists like Gui Boratto and Wahoo. Disc two is a mix of tracks from both of Saul’s labels, Simple and Aus, with tracks and remixes by My My, John Tejada, Sebo K & Metro and more.

JONNY GREENWOOD: There Will Be Blood [soundtrack]
BURIAL: Untrue
Hyperdub
Burial wastes no time following up his self-titled 2006 LP (our favorite of the year). Untrue is at once familiar and new. Burial’s beats—still stiff and stubbornly simplistic—won’t surprise anyone, but Untrue’s emphasis on vocals—coherent and passionate R&B samples prominently featured in the mix—turns out to be a staggering innovation.
FAIRMONT: Coloured in Memory
Border Community
Jake Fairley moves to James Holden’s Border Community label for his second full-length and suitably shifts his aesthetic from the melodic techno of his Traum debut, Paper Stars, to something a bit more tense and roughed-up. His penchant for techy songwriting and speak-sing vocals isn’t completely diminished—tracks like “Fade and Saturate” prove he’s still capable there and the title track goes so far as to feature just him and a guitar. Elsewhere, the choral hum of first single “Flight of the Albatross” and twinkly interlude “Pomegranate” are transparent nods to the gentler side of Aphex Twin.
ONUR ÖZER: Kasmir
Vakant
Turkish producer Onur Özer presents Vakant’s first full-length, and it sets an impossibly high standard for the label. Kasmir’s stark minimalism fleshed out by what sounds like hand-played percussion is hard to place–only Villalobos’ Perlon LP Thé Au Harem D’Archimède immediately comes to mind. Air-tight from start to finish, not a sound is misplaced, not one second goes wasted. Add this to 2007’s list of albums by dance/electronic producers who have proven that the album format is not lost to the genre (Efdemin, Pole, Pantha du Prince, etc.).
SLEEPARCHIVE & ANTTI RANNISTO: Sleeparchive & Antti Rannisto
Sleeparchive
Sleeparchive shares his first CD of bleepy ambient with Antti Rannisto (12K).
ALTER EGO: Why Not?!
Klang Elektronik
Maximal, antagonistic techno from Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke…
GESCOM: A1-D1
Skam
The latest from this Autechre-affiliated collective collects the tracks from 3 vinyl EPs.
SAWAKO: Madoromi
Anticipate
The Anticipate label follows up Morgan Packard’s Airships Fill the Sky with Sawako’s sleepy ambient.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM: 45′33″ (DFA/ Astralwerks)
James Murphy’s Nike-sponsored mix project is now available on CD along with bonus tracks culled from the b-sides of Sound of Silver’s singles. As the story goes, Nike commissioned Murphy to make a work out-length mix designed to make the minutes fly by as you sweat it out on the treadmill. The funky, propulsive mix (of his own, original material) he came up with far surpasses the more rock-oriented Sound of Silver, if you ask us.
